In the meantime…
A few words about ships and such by way of E. Iannelli
After my recent cruise through the Caribbean this past February, the attire worn on board by my fellow passengers, made me beg the question: what has happened to the classic/glamorous days of cruising?! Crocs are never a substitute for proper footwear (no matter the time of day!), and even though you’re on vacation and want to be “comfortable,” “easy-going”, “effortless” etc., cruise style can also be extremely versatile and wearable.
So if anyone is planning an upcoming cruise and thinking they have to buy an entirely new wardrobe, on top the enormous amount already being paid for a stateroom with a view and a butler named Richard, you are completely wrong: in fact, look in your closet and you may already have the pieces I recommend bringing here. Lightweight knits pack extremely well, and are less prone to wrinkling than fabrics that are woven; bring them in fun colours, with one or two pairs of walking shorts in a neutral colour and voila! … a day time look that is both practical and pretty (or handsome). Accessorize with a wide-brimmed hat for the ladies, and sleek, retro-inspired sunglasses for the gentlemen. Pretty, patterned scarves are also fun pops of colour AND take up less space and weight in the suitcase than chunky jewellery. Moving down to the feet, I love the look and versatility of a simple, soft-souled loafer that is easy to slip on, and works well both on and off the boat. And when it comes to evening wear, don’t be afraid to make an entrance at the Captain’s Dinner.
Ladies: I found silk dresses to work particularly well because they are a natural fiber with elasticity, and hence prone to wrinkles. I am a slave to all things prints but if that’s too much for you, work a rich, jewel tone colour. Top it off with a little blazer (or a jean jacket if you’re feeling trendy) and a cute pair of neutral heels. NOTE: neutral heels go with absolutely everything AND elongate your legs to make you look/feel like Giselle! Neutral heels in for the win! Happy Cruising!
Sempre con stile,
